If we would simply make the effort to teach about discipline, perseverance, courage and strength, we would be teaching children that regardless of the obstacles, we can reach our dreams

Maria Jose's Story

Maria lives in Costa Rica and her favorite thing in life is ballet. She started dancing when she was 4 years old, and despite a diagnosis of scoliosis, she never gave up on her dream. Maria is now a member of the Russian Ballet Academy in Costa Rica, and she shares her story to motivate other children. Her project, Soñemos Juntos (dreaming together), offers a safe environment to children living on low incomes in high-risk areas, in which to express themselves through ballet. She even organized a fundraiser to provide the children with ballet shoes and clothes. In the project, she teaches them about discipline, perseverance, effort and drive to overcome the obstacles they face daily, and to build their capacity to transform their own lives.
