Exhibition ‘The International Children’s Peace Prize’ in the Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam

Thursday, April 13, 2017 - 14:59

On April 14th ‘The International Children’s Peace Prize’ exhibition of KidsRights opens in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. The exhibition premieres in Amsterdam alongside the World Press Photo 2017 and will travel to various locations worldwide.

The world renowned International Children’s Peace Prize is awarded annually by an Nobel Peace Laureate to a child who fights courageously for children’s rights. The exhibition portrays the history of the prize and of the young winners, who inspire millions of people every year. “These children show us that change is possible and that children are changemakers. Just like the photos of the World Press Photo they call upon the global community to act for change”, says Marc Dullaert, Founder and Chairman of KidsRights.

The exhibition uses photography and storytelling to illustrate the extraordinary work of the young winners. In addition, Malala’s original exams from her time at school in Pakistan are on display, as well as the statuette ‘Nkosi’ that all winners receive. Malala received the International Children’s Peace Prize in 2013 for her courageous fight for the right to education, especially for girls. The statuette is named after Nkosi Johnson who was posthumously awarded with the first International Children’s Peace Prize in 2005. Nkosi was born with hiv in 1989 and during his short life he successfully campaigned for the rights of children with hiv/aids. The story of his special bond with Nelson Mandela is also part of the exhibition.

Through an interactive computer program visitors can swipe photos of the winners onto an immense screen to create a playful mosaic. Furthermore people can experience previous award ceremonies in a pop-up cinema. The overview includes unique footage of a dancing Patron Desmond Tutu smiled upon by the Dutch King Willem Alexander at the jubilee celebration in 2014.
